Nineveh is like a pool,

and its water is draining away.

“Stop! Stop!” they cry,

but no one turns back.

Plunder the silver!

Plunder the gold!

The supply is endless,

the wealth from all its treasures! (2:8–9)

Other symptoms of their overconfident comfort and consuming lifestyle are found throughout the book. They are drunk from their wine, like dry stubble for burning (1:10). They are numerous and have many allies (1:12). They are full of lies and plunder (3:1), boundless in strength (3:9), and they have fortresses like a full ripe fig tree (3:12); merchants are as numerous as the stars (3:16), guards and officials are like swarms of locusts (3:17), and shepherds and nobles lie down to rest in the midst of a battle (3:18). Nineveh is full of ripe excesses.
